During his high school years, Víctor Eddie López Valentín distinguished himself through his leadership, discipline, and commitment to his fellow students. In 1972, he was elected Vice President of the Graduating Class at Antonio S. Pedreira High School in Moca, Puerto Rico.

His role in the student government reflected the qualities that would define him throughout his life: responsibility, initiative, integrity, and a genuine commitment to serving others. Those formative years marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of leadership that would later extend into education, athletics, business, real estate, community service, and, ultimately, the craftsmanship of traditional Puerto Rican percussion instruments.

Businessman – 1975

On July 9, 1975, in Moca, Puerto Rico, Víctor E. López Valentín embarked on an entrepreneurial journey driven by his passion for sports and his strong business spirit. His first business, El Esporcito – La Casa del Deportista (The Athlete's House), was located at 151 Barbosa Street in Moca, where he initially specialized in sporting goods, athletic apparel, and sports-related products.

As the business grew, he expanded its services to include custom screen printing for athletic uniforms, team apparel, and promotional garments, earning the trust of schools, sports organizations, businesses, and community groups throughout the region.

His entrepreneurial vision continued to evolve, leading to the establishment of Creative Awards & Plastics, where he broadened his expertise into the design and production of awards, trophies, plaques, medals, signage, and custom plastic products. Through hard work, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to quality, the company built a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and outstanding customer service.

What began as a small sporting goods store in Moca eventually became a respected and successful business, laying the foundation for a professional career spanning more than five decades. Throughout those years, Víctor had the privilege of serving thousands of individuals, schools, businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and institutions both in Puerto Rico and abroad, helping recognize achievements and celebrate excellence through products crafted with pride, creativity, and dedication.

1968–1978 & 2004–2007 – Musician

Music played a central role throughout the life of Víctor Eddie López Valentín. Between 1968 and 1978, he was an active member of several musical groups in western Puerto Rico, establishing himself as a talented percussionist. During this period, he performed with groups such as Los Cemies, where he developed his skills playing congas and other percussion instruments while participating in community events, dances, festivals, and cultural celebrations.

Decades later, from 2004 to 2007, Víctor returned to the stage as a member of Remembranzas Melódicas, a musical group dedicated to preserving Puerto Rican popular music, boleros, and traditional Christmas aguinaldos. As the group's percussionist, he played bongos and congas (tumbadoras), performing at cultural events, holiday celebrations, and community gatherings throughout Puerto Rico.

Through music, Víctor cultivated the values of discipline, teamwork, and a deep appreciation for Puerto Rican culture. His years as a musician complemented his work as an educator, athlete, entrepreneur, and artisan, while also enriching his understanding of rhythm and tradition—knowledge that would later be reflected in the handcrafted bomba drums he built.

Nearly two decades of active musical participation left a lasting mark on his life and became an essential part of his cultural legacy. His passion for percussion not only connected him to audiences but also strengthened his lifelong commitment to preserving and promoting Puerto Rico's rich musical heritage.

Founding Member of the Moca Neighborhood Basketball League (1972)

In 1972, Víctor Eddie López Valentín was a founding member of the Moca Neighborhood Basketball League, a community-based recreational initiative that brought together young people and adults through their shared passion for basketball.

Physical Education Teacher and Professor (1970s–2000s)

Education was one of Víctor E. López Valentín's greatest passions and lifelong callings. Throughout his professional career, he served as a Physical Education teacher in elementary and secondary schools, dedicating many years to helping children and young adults develop not only athletic skills, but also discipline, teamwork, respect, and healthy lifestyles.

Believing that sports were a powerful tool for personal growth, Víctor encouraged his students to strive for excellence both on and off the playing field. His classes emphasized responsibility, perseverance, fair play, and self-confidence—values that many of his former students continue to remember and apply in their lives today.

His commitment to education later led him to become a university professor, where he shared his knowledge and professional experience with future educators and other students. More than an instructor, he was a mentor who inspired others through his enthusiasm, leadership, and genuine interest in helping people reach their full potential.

Víctor's career as an educator was closely connected to his lifelong passion for athletics. As both a teacher and coach, he worked to promote physical fitness, healthy habits, and the importance of teamwork, while encouraging young people to become responsible citizens and community leaders.

Founding Member of Los Explosivos de Moca (1992)

Sports played a central role in the life of Víctor Eddie López Valentín, not only as an athlete and educator, but also as a sports promoter and community leader. Among his many contributions to the town of Moca, he was a founding member of the Los Explosivos de Moca basketball franchise, an organization that provided opportunities for athletic development and community entertainment for young players and basketball fans throughout the region.

Víctor had the honor of serving as the team's first General Manager, assuming responsibility for the administrative, organizational, and operational leadership of the franchise during its early years. His vision, leadership, and commitment were instrumental in establishing and growing the organization.

Through Los Explosivos de Moca, he helped strengthen community sports by supporting the development of young athletes while promoting the values of teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.

2019 – Certified Artisan of Puerto Rican Bomba Drums

In March 2019, Víctor E. López Valentín received his official Artisan Certification from the Artisan Development Program of the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO). This certification formally recognized the quality, authenticity, and craftsmanship of his work in the category of Wood and Leather – Puerto Rican Bomba Drums.

Following a thorough evaluation of his instruments and the techniques used in their construction, the Government of Puerto Rico determined that his handcrafted drums met the standards required to be recognized as authentic Puerto Rican folk art. As a result, he was officially certified as a Bona Fide Artisan, receiving Artisan Registration No. 24310.

This certification marked a significant milestone in Víctor's career as a drum maker, validating years of learning, dedication, and commitment to preserving the rich tradition of Puerto Rican bomba. From that moment on, he became part of the Official Registry of Puerto Rican Artisans, further strengthening the cultural legacy he continued to build through VL Drums.

The certification recognized not only the exceptional quality of his handcrafted instruments, but also his valuable contribution to preserving, promoting, and passing on one of Puerto Rico's most important musical and cultural traditions.
